AUTOPHAGY

Watercolor and ink on paper. 56 x 76 cm each. 2023.

The “Autofagia” series is a set of historical graphic pieces that deal with the representation of Brazilian territory. The series sets out to contrast these maps with other cartographic representations, seeking to unveil the discourses of domination present in images of supposed national integration.

The works in the “Autofagia” series shed light on the hypothesis that these modern representations reiterated colonial violence, insofar as they updated these logics of domination under the conciliatory narrative of the country’s modernization. Thus,
the suspicious convergence between the colonial and the modern is evident in the dichotomy between the coast as a representation of the West, and the interior of the continent as a space of representation of the “other”.
