“MAPS”

Untitled series. Acrylic, watercolor, gouache and India ink on paper.
2015 - 2018.

The "maps" series is a set of paintings made between 2016 and 2018, the initial period of my artistic practice. The works are characterized by an interest in looking at cartographic language as a poetic issue, as well as the use of allegorical figures and architectural structures in different situations.

In general, these works are dedicated to investigating the technical and supposedly universal language of modern cartography, seeking to raise questions about how the apparent scientific aspect of these representations legitimize and naturalize arbitrary perspectives as reality itself.

The representations of Brazilian territory on quantitative maps, as well as the drawing of various cities in the country, emerge as a theme that runs through the different works. It shows how technical drawing not only allows for the fiction of the national unity of the territory, but also enables the production of new internal spaces based on this fiction, like a superimposition of myths.
